Queenstown Cinema, Bowling Centre

There seem to be renovaton works going on at the abandoned Queenstown Cinema complex. It used to be the in-place, with the Queenstown Bowl and the then popular Kentucky Fried Chicken packing them in.

Maybe it will become a cinema again ? With bowling too ?
But the lease is for short term, as this building is not slated to be preserved under the Dawson Remake, so lessees will not spend astro sum to fit a cinema or a bowling alley.
It can become another food court, as no other business can make money in this depressed time.

The old market will be preserved, with upgrading, to become a community area.

Which will look like this...

And this was how it all began...The Straits Times, 30 May 1975

  1. I am a student who is doing a project on this site. and we are grouped to give a proposal on the rejuvenation of the old site with added assumptions. Now i am a bit confused about it, if u were the proposer, how would u suppose it being rejuvenated??

  2. hi michelle, thanks for writing.

it is widely known that Dawson estate is undergoing revamp. 3 new blocks will be built at the ntuc, blk 39A site.
my idea to rejuvenate the cinema is to bring back the cinema (what else)
    and a food mall.
if you remember the old "in" queenstown in the 1970s, the centre is where the tai chung emporium. it's not a bad idea to repeat the idea.
however the cinema is not slated to be preserved. only the round roof building is.

  3. The commercial information is not readily available other than the fact that the cinema complex was built in 1977

  4. Information perhaps could be available at HDB. However Straits Times report at the time revealed the cinema developer is Chong Gay Theatres Ltd, owned by the late Mr Lim Djit Sun who passed away in 1987 at age 65. By the way, he was also the founder of Overseas Emporium in 1970.
