Why did the ancient societies build giant structures ?

Modern man build them for political prestige.



The Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889.

Of the 700 proposals submitted in a design competition, Gustave Eiffel's was unanimously chosen.

It was almost torn down in 1909, but was saved because of its antenna - used for telegraphy at that time.


The Statue of Liberty was completed in France in July, 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885.

The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution.



The Great Wall of China is actually constructed over several dynasties.

It began when the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang ordered to link up the three disconnected walls built by Yan, Zhao and ex-Qin States.

The wall as we see today was constructed from 220BC and finished in 1620 by the Ming dynasty.


The Pyramids of Egypt were built as tombs for Kings.

The first pyramid was probably built 2500BC.



The Sydney Opera House committee got the project under way in 1954.

The first performance was held on 28 September 1973.

Mount Rushmore stone carving commenced from 4th of October 1927.

It took 14 years and was completed in 1941.

The faces of four past Presidents of United States of America was chosen to have a more national focus.
